Pakenham Upper-Toomuc Cricket Club
The final week of the home and away season, saw the Yabbies make the semi-finals in A Premier and E grades. The girls reached the VWCA South-East one-day grand final (best of 3 matches) against Mornington 1 at Seaford. In the junior ranks, Under17 Gold finished second, and Under13s finished fourth to reach the finals. Good luck to all teams this weekend!
B grade deserve an honourable mention, finishing fifth and just missing out on finals action on percentage. C grade also finished fifth. A very good all-round club performance. If you’re not playing yourself, get along and support some Yabby clubmates this week. By the way, the Under 13s are playing away at Pakenham No.2 oval against the Lions, on Thursday and Friday evenings, so why not cheer on the boys? On the subject of Pakenham, many thanks to Phil Anning and his team, who allowed our girls to use their ground and clubrooms last Sunday week in a nice gesture of support. This allowed us to host the very successful 20/20 Grand Final once again.

Here’s the run-down of this week’s action:

A Premier

Cardinia resumed on 3/136 following a rain-affected first day, and reached 9/253cc after 60 overs. Andrew & Adam Cooper both took a brace of wickets, while Chris Smith (3/35) was chief wicket-taker.

Darren Warne (20) and Shannon Price (23) opened well in reply. Andrew Hilder and Smith began solidly, but a hailstorm and torrential rains brought proceedings to a halt.

B Grade

The Yabbies struggled at Cardinia, being reduced to 7 down before the rains came and forced the draw.

C Grade

Chasing Emerald’s imposing 7/265 at Tynong, the Yabbies began well. Chris Sharpe (16) departed in the eighth over but a 126 run stand from Josh Noonan (85) and James Perkins (67) took the score to 2/163. The challenge waned after their dismissals, and when the hailstorms came, the scorecard read 4/177.

E Grade

PUT lost a wicket in the first over, but recovered through Darren Temby (26) and Justin Temby (33). Paul Ryan hit an unbeaten 31 and the Yabbies finished all out for 156. Monsoon rains and hailstones rained down, and the match was abandoned with points shared.

F Grade

PUT played a semi-final against Emerald and fielded first. The Bombers lost their first wicket at 77 then 102, then 204 to pile on the pressure, eventually amassing 7/265 from 35 overs. Ian Halkyard and John Barrow took two wickets apiece. Terry Bowler (52 ret) and Chris Gunton (25) got the reply off to a cracking start, but Gunton’s dismissal and Bowler’s retirement saw the challenge stall, the innings finishing on 5/172 at the close of play.

Ladies

The Yabby girls played Kingston Heath at Dandenong in the semi-final, and bowled first. Evelyn Rannstrom (2/6 off 6) bowled well, and Leanne Baker (2/6) did well too. Captain Vicky Downes led from the front, taking 4/14 off 10 overs, and the opposition was all out for 77 before the rains came, and PUT was through to its first VWCA Grand Final. Good luck girls!
